Uppsala, Sweden’s Oxford

Uppsala is the oldest university city in Scandinavia, and it wears it well. You walk the old town with a host who knows which doors are worth stopping at, follow the river through streets that have carried students for five centuries, and finish at the cathedral — the tallest in the Nordics, and the place where Swedish kings were crowned. It is a day built on history, told the way you would tell it to a friend rather than read it off a plaque. Close enough to Stockholm to be an easy day out, far enough to feel like somewhere else entirely.
